Commissioned into the French Navy in 2004, the Rafale M (Marine), developed by Dassault Aviation, is one of the most battle-hardened combat aircraft in the world. As an omnirole fighter, it can perform all types of missions and replace up to seven aircraft from previous generations. It is frequently deployed thousands of kilometers from mainland France aboard the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, taking part in France’s military operations.
After a brief introductory section outlining the history of French Naval Aviation, the book focuses on the current generation of Rafales in service on the aircraft carrier. It highlights the aircraft’s technological evolution, avionics, weaponry, and maintenance, according to different mission types: deterrence, air combat, maritime strike, close air support, and reconnaissance.
The exceptional photographs by Cyrille Cosmao showcase the Rafale and personnel in all phases of operations: maintenance and repairs, weapons loading, catapult launches, flights and maneuvers, carrier landings... The roles of the men and women aboard the aircraft carrier are extensively covered, with unique insights into logistical constraints, team coordination, and safety requirements. These various perspectives offer the reader a window into an unknown world—the adventure and commitment of the 2,000 sailors who operate the Rafale M from the Charles de Gaulle.
