The Mirage 2000-5 is the latest addition to the family of Mirage 2000 combat aircraft.
It is designed as a multirole aircraft, building on the development work and experience gained with the other Mirage 2000s (Mirage 2000C, Mirage 2000N and Mirage 2000D). The latest weapons and equipment have been adapted to the aircraft.
It is powered by a 9.8 metric ton SNECMA M53-P2 turbofan engine with afterburner thrust, optimized to effectively fulfill all the missions assigned to a combat aircraft in a very extensive flight envelope (60,000 ft or 18,000 m / Mach 2.2).
The Mirage 2000-5 is available in a single-seat and two-seat version. The two-seater has all the operational capabilities and performance of the single-seater. It can also be used for advanced pilot training. The two-seat version has been ordered for export (Taiwan, Qatar, and Greece).
The aircraft, which entered into service in the French Air Force in 1999 at the Dijon air base, then equipped the EC 1/2 Cigognes and EC 2/2 Côtes d'Or squadrons. The Mirage 2000-5s of the French Air Force and Space currently belong to the 2nd Fighter Squadron – stationed at the Luxeuil Saint-Sauveur air base (BA 116). These aircraft equip the EC 1/2 Cigognes Squadron. Some aircraft are assigned to the Military Air Expertise Center (CEAM) in Mont-de-Marsan for experiments.
As part of the ceremonies to commemorate the Great War, the year 2017 was chosen by the French Air and Space Force to pay tribute to the Aces.
Airbase 116 “Lieutenant-colonel Tony Papin” and fighter squadron EC 1/2 Cigognes decided to honor the memory of the Ace of Aces, Charles Guynemer, reported missing in action on 17 September 1917.
The creativity of Régis Rocca has embodied the spirit of “Vieux Charles”, Captain Guynemer’s Spad VII, in the livery of the Mirage 2000-5.
