The primary mission of the 1/4 Gascogne and 2/4 La Fayette fighter squadrons is airborne nuclear deterrence operating the Rafale B (F3R standard) and the upgraded ASMP-A nuclear missile. Thanks to the versatility of the Rafale, they carry out all the missions required of fighter jets by the French Air and Space Force. This includes deployment on external operations for conventional day/night assault and quick reaction alerts.
The combination of the Rafale B and the upgraded ASMP-A ensures the technical and operational credibility of the Strategic Air Forces units, which have provided unstinting nuclear deterrence since 1964 when they operated the Mirage IV A fighter with the AN22 nuclear bomb.
