A single-engine fighter-bomber, the Mirage III was designed and built under a light interceptor programme initiated by the French Air Force in the wake of the Korean War (1950-1953). It combines a delta wing with a “Coke bottle” fuselage designed in accordance with the area rule. The Mirage III 001 made its maiden flight under pilot Roland Glavany on 17 November 1956 at Melun-Villaroche. It was then fitted with variable-section air inlets featuring movable shock cones (nicknamed “mice”) and servo controls invented by Dassault Aviation engineers. A legendary aircraft that played a starring role in the TV series Les Chevaliers du Ciel (The Aeronauts), the Mirage III is the iconic Dassault Aviation fighter aircraft and the first member of the Mirage family. The Mirage III and its derivative, the Mirage 5, were deployed in operational units in the French Air Force from 1961 to 1994. The model shown here belongs to the EC 1/2 Cigognes fighter squadron, based at Airbase 102 Dijon-Longvic. It carries additional RPS 500 supersonic fuel tanks and Matra 530 missiles.
