Atlantique 2 - 1:72 Scale Model

In the mid-1970s, faced with the increasing threat posed by submarines and surface vessels, the French Navy decided to deploy a new generation of the Atlantique maritime patrol aircraft. Two Atlantique 2 (ATL2) prototypes were built, based on two Atlantique from the original series (nos. 42 and 69). They were modified to carry different components of the new weapons system and equipped with the upgrades planned for the new production series. Some structural improvements were introduced, although there was no major change to basic airframe. The aerodynamics were improved and extensive use was made of honeycomb materials to reduce the weight of the “double-bubble” fuselage. All-new electronic systems incorporated the latest technological advances while allowing for subsequent upgrades. The ATL2 airframe was manufactured by a European consortium. It is the only maritime patrol aircraft in the world to have been designed specifically for this type of mission, rather than being derived from a civilian commercial aircraft. The first of a series of 28 aircraft was delivered in 1988. In 2013, under the Standard 6 programme, a combat system upgrade contract awarded to Dassault Aviation by the DGA (the French defence procurement agency), the aircraft was given striking new capabilities: new radar, a new acoustic subsystem, a new console, etc. The upgrade will enable the ATL2s to perform even more effectively, not only in supporting the French Strategic Oceanic Force but in all missions assigned to these “frigates of the sky”.
